How this quiz works

Africa is the largest continent by country count — 54 of the world's 195 — and the one most people lose a world quiz in. Type names into the box and each one lands in its alphabetical block.

The west coast is where runs usually stall: Benin, Togo, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea are the four most commonly forgotten. Note that Guinea waits for Enter, because it is also the start of Guinea-Bissau, and the same goes for Niger against Nigeria.

When the clock runs out, or when you give up, every country you missed is revealed.

Questions people ask

How many countries are there in Africa?

54, counting the 54 UN member states on the continent. Western Sahara is left out because its status is disputed, and the island states of Cabo Verde, Comoros, Mauritius, São Tomé and Príncipe and Seychelles are all included.

Can I change the timer?

Yes. Pick 3, 5, 10 or 15 minutes before you start, or choose Count up — that mode has no limit and the clock stops the moment you get the last one, so it doubles as a speedrun timer. Your choice is remembered for next time.

Does spelling have to be exact?

Capitals, spaces, hyphens, punctuation and accents are all ignored, so “cote divoire”, “Côte d’Ivoire” and “ivory coast” all count, and “cape verde” matches Cabo Verde. Where one answer is the start of another, the shorter one waits for Enter so the longer one stays typeable.

Do I need an account?
