How this quiz works

Type state names into the box and each one lands in its census region. The regional tallies are the useful part: seeing 9/12 in the Midwest tells you where to look far faster than staring at an alphabet.

New England is the classic blind spot — six small states in one corner — and so is the Mountain West, where Idaho, Montana and Wyoming blur together. Work region by region.

When the clock runs out, or when you give up, every state you missed is revealed in its region.

Questions people ask

How many US states are there?

50. Washington, D.C. is a federal district rather than a state, and Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands are territories, so none of them are answers here.

Can I change the timer?

Yes. Pick 3, 5, 10 or 15 minutes before you start, or choose Count up — that mode has no limit and the clock stops the moment you get the last one, so it doubles as a speedrun timer. Your choice is remembered for next time.

Does spelling have to be exact?

Capitals, spaces, hyphens, punctuation and accents are all ignored, so “new hampshire”, “New Hampshire” and “newhampshire” all count. Where one answer is the start of another, the shorter one waits for Enter so the longer one stays typeable.

Which regions are the states grouped into?

The four US Census Bureau regions: Northeast (9), Midwest (12), South (16) and West (13). It is the standard grouping, so the tallies match what you will have seen elsewhere.

Do I need an account?
