How this quiz works

Type park names into the box — “Zion” is enough, and “Zion National Park” works too. Each one lands in its region with the state it sits in shown underneath, out of 63 in all.

Utah's five and the California parks come fast. Alaska is where the run ends: eight of the sixty-three are there, and Gates of the Arctic, Kobuk Valley and Lake Clark are three of the least visited places in the entire system.

The Rockies and Southwest is the biggest block on the board at twenty, and the East and South is the thinnest — which surprises most people until they try to name a national park east of the Mississippi.

When the clock runs out, or when you give up, every park you missed is revealed in its region.

Questions people ask

How many national parks are there in the US?

63 — but only if you mean units Congress has designated a National Park. The National Park Service runs more than 400 sites in total, including monuments, preserves, seashores, battlefields and historic sites. Those are different designations and are not answers here, which is exactly why the number is a clean 63 rather than “about four hundred”.

Can I change the timer?

Yes. Pick 3, 5, 10 or 15 minutes before you start, or choose Count up — that mode has no limit and the clock stops the moment you get the last one, so it doubles as a speedrun timer. Your choice is remembered for next time.

Do I have to press Enter?

No. Every answer is taken the moment you finish spelling it and the box clears itself, so you can type straight through a run without touching Enter. Names that begin another name are handled too: type “niger” and Niger counts immediately, then carry on with “ia” — or just type “nigeria” in one go — and Nigeria counts as well.

Does spelling have to be exact?

Capitals, spaces, hyphens, punctuation and accents are all ignored, so “great smoky mountains” and “Great Smoky Mountains National Park” both count, and “haleakala” matches Haleakalā. There is no Enter to press — an answer counts the instant you finish spelling it.

Which state has the most national parks?

California, with nine. Alaska has eight and Utah has five, so those three states hold a third of the whole list between them — the single most useful thing to know before you start.
