How Many Players Do You Need for the Imposter Game?

Updated 2 October 2026

You need at least three people for the imposter game, and it plays best with four to ten. One phone handles up to 20 players with the free imposter game generator, and an online room holds up to 12.

The number that matters more than the head count is the ratio of imposters to crew. Get it wrong and the round is over in one clue, or nobody can ever catch the imposter. The list below gives a starting point for every group size, and the sections after it cover the awkward ones: three players, two players and big groups.

How many imposters for each group size

Start here, then adjust: if the crew wins three rounds running, add an imposter or switch the hint off.

  • 3 players: 1 imposter, hint on.
  • 4 to 5 players: 1 imposter. Hint on for new groups, off once everyone knows the rules.
  • 6 to 8 players: 2 imposters.
  • 9 to 12 players: 2 or 3 imposters, with a timed discussion so the vote does not drag.
  • 13 to 20 players: 3 imposters, or split into two groups and play side by side.

Playing with 3 people

Three players works, but each clue carries a lot of weight. With one imposter and two crew, the imposter only has to sound like one other person, and the crew only has two suspects. Rounds are short and tense.

Two changes help. Switch the imposter hint on, so the imposter can survive the first clue round. Then play two clue rounds before anyone votes, because one round rarely gives the crew enough to go on. With three players, a vote that ends in a tie means nobody goes out, which hands the round to the imposter.

Can you play the imposter game with 2 people?

Not the standard version. With one imposter and one crew member, the crew member knows the other person is the imposter the moment they see the word. There is nobody to hide behind.

Two people can still play a guessing game with the same words. One person draws a word from the list and describes it without saying it, and the other guesses. For acting instead of talking, the charades generator picks the word and keeps time. Bring in a third player as soon as you can, because three is where the bluffing starts.

Big groups of 10 to 20

Large groups have the opposite problem. With fifteen people giving clues, the round takes a long time and the imposter can stay quiet in the crowd. Use three imposters, keep clues to one word, and give the discussion a one-minute timer.

For twenty players at a party, two parallel games of ten are usually better than one game of twenty. Each group gets its own phone and its own round, and nobody waits more than a minute for their turn.

When the group is not in one room

Pass-and-play needs everyone around one phone. If your group is spread out, play the imposter game online: one person creates a room, everyone joins with the code on their own phone, and the clues and votes happen in the room. A room holds 2 to 12 players, and the same advice on imposter counts applies.

Common questions

What is the minimum number of players for the imposter game?
Three: one imposter and two crew. Four or more is better, because the imposter has more people to blend in with.
Can you play imposter with 2 people?
Not the standard game, because the only crew member knows the other player must be the imposter. Two people can play a describe-and-guess round with the same words, or charades, until a third player joins.
How many imposters should there be for 8 players?
Two. One imposter in a group of eight usually gets caught in the first clue round. Three imposters suit eight experienced players who want chaos.
What is the maximum number of players?
On one phone the generator takes 3 to 20 players. Online rooms hold up to 12. Past about twelve, splitting into two groups makes for better rounds.
How many players does the football imposter game need?
The same as the classic game: three or more. The football imposter game uses footballers as the secret word and the same player and imposter settings.
