Imposter Game Words With Hints: 80 Words and the Hint for Each
Updated 2 October 2026
With the hint switched on, the imposter does not get a blank card. They get one related word, enough to aim a bluff in roughly the right direction. The hint decides how the round plays. Make it too close and the imposter cannot lose. Make it too vague and they might as well have nothing.
Each word below comes with a hint pitched in the middle, and an example of the kind of clue an honest crew member might give. Use them as they are, or as a model for your own. The free imposter game generator writes the hints for you, in every language the site supports.
What makes a fair hint
A fair hint puts the imposter in the right neighbourhood without giving them the address. For "Bread", the hint "Bakery" is too close: three things come out of a bakery and the imposter can bluff about all of them. "Breakfast" works better. It narrows the field to toast, cereal, eggs and coffee, so the imposter still has to listen before committing.
Three rules cover most cases. Never use a synonym or a part of the word. Never use the clue most players would give first, or the imposter repeats it. And pick a hint that fits at least three other words, so the imposter has to choose.
80 imposter game words with hints
The hint is what the imposter sees. The crew clue shows the sort of answer that proves a player knows the word without handing it to the imposter.

How to use the table
- Choose the word in secret. One person who is not playing, or the generator, picks a row.
- Show the crew the word and the imposter the hint. Never show anyone the crew clue column. It is there to show you the level to aim for.
- If the imposter wins three rounds running, drop the hint. If the crew wins three running, make the hint one step closer to the word.
- Retire a word once it has been played. Even with a different hint, the group remembers the clues from last time.
Using hints in the generator
In the imposter game generator, switch on Imposter hint before you start the reveals. Every player still looks at the phone in turn. The crew sees the secret word, and the imposter sees a hint where the word would be. Each imposter gets a different hint when you play with two or more.
You can write your own hints too. In the settings, open Customize words and hints, then add a word with its hints after a bar: "Bread | breakfast, oven". The football imposter game and the famous people imposter game use the same switch, with hints written for each footballer and celebrity.
Common questions
- What is a hint in the imposter game?
- A single related word shown to the imposter in place of the secret word. It helps them bluff in roughly the right direction without telling them the answer.
- What is a good imposter hint for bread?
- "Breakfast". It points at a meal with several candidates (toast, cereal, eggs), so the imposter still has to listen to the crew before giving a clue.
- Should the imposter get a hint?
- For new groups and for children, yes. A hint keeps rounds going long enough to be fun. Experienced adult groups usually play without one.
- How do I make my own imposter hints?
- Pick a word that fits the secret and at least three other things, avoid synonyms and parts of the word, and avoid the first clue most people would give. The questions to catch the imposter guide covers the other side: how the crew spots a bluff.
