What makes a good clue
Clue craftA good clue proves you know the player without handing the name to the imposter. "Scored in overtime" is safe. "Wore ninety-nine" is not — that is the answer with extra steps.
The strongest clues sit one step sideways from the obvious: the country, the decade, the position, the way they skated. Save trophies and records for the second round, once the imposter has already had to commit.
Imposter playbook
BluffingWhen the clues are easy
- Echo the shape of the last clue without adding a fact.
- Agree with someone confidently, then add a detail so vague it fits anyone.
- Name an era rather than a player — decades are safe ground.
When you have nothing
- Talk about a style of play instead of a person.
- Ask a question back. Curiosity reads as knowledge.
- Commit to one wrong-but-plausible country and stay there. Wobbling is what gets you caught.
Example rounds
Worked examplesA Swedish defenceman
MediumCrew clue style
- "Never took a penalty he did not mean to take."
- "Spent a very long time in one American city."
- "Made the hard thing look boring."
Imposter tip
Talk about era, country and position before anyone talks about trophies. Vague beats specific when you have no idea who it is.
A modern superstar
EasyCrew clue style
- "Fastest thing on the ice from a standing start."
- "Carries the whole team on some nights."
- "Wears the C very young."
Imposter tip
Talk about era, country and position before anyone talks about trophies. Vague beats specific when you have no idea who it is.
A goaltender
HardCrew clue style
- "Does the job facing the wrong way round."
- "Calm is the whole skill."
- "The crowd only learns the name after a bad night."
Imposter tip
Talk about era, country and position before anyone talks about trophies. Vague beats specific when you have no idea who it is.
House rules worth stealing
VariantsSetups that change the feel
- Two imposters in a group of eight — they do not know each other, which is where it gets funny.
- Hints off for experienced groups. Hints on if anyone is new to hockey.
- Goalies only, or one country only, if you want a harder night.
Scoring tweaks
- The imposter steals the round if they name the player after being voted out.
- One point per crew member for a correct vote, two for the imposter who survives.
- Tied vote means the imposter escapes. It keeps the arguing honest.
Questions people actually ask
FAQDo I need to know hockey to play?
No. The crew all see the name on screen, so the knowledge is on the phone rather than in your head. Leave the imposter hint switched on and a newcomer can bluff perfectly well from a single word.
How many people does this work with?
Three at a minimum, and it is at its best between five and ten. Past ten, add a second imposter or rounds start to drag.
Is it only NHL players?
No. The list leans on the NHL because that is where most of the famous names ended up, but it includes Soviet and European greats who never played a game there.
Does anyone need to install anything?
No. It runs in the browser on the one phone you are already passing around, and it is free.
What is the difference between this and the classic mode?
Only the word list. Classic mode pulls from everyday words; this one only ever gives you hockey players, so every clue can lean on the sport.
Mode guide
How to get better rounds with hockey players, teams, eras, and positions
This mode focuses the imposter game on hockey players, teams, eras, and positions, which gives every player a clear theme before the first clue is spoken. It is especially useful for sports fans who know players but still enjoy bluffing, because the group can start discussing fast without needing a long rules explanation.
For the first round, keep the setup simple: one imposter, short private reveals, and clues that point toward the answer without naming it. The strongest clues usually use era, role, achievement, team, or visual clues, so crew members sound helpful while imposters still have room to bluff.
Replay works best when the group changes the starting player, mixes easy and hard clues, and talks through suspicious answers before voting. If a round feels too obvious, turn off the hint or raise the difficulty; if it feels too hard, use the hint and ask for more concrete clues.
Best group fit
Built for sports fans who know players but still enjoy bluffing, with quick setup on a single phone.
Clue approach
A balanced round works when players use era, role, achievement, team, or visual clues.
Replay tip
Rotate who gives the first clue so the same player is not always under pressure.
