0/4How this quiz works
Type country names into the box and each one lands in the wave it joined with, from the twelve founders of 1949 to Sweden in 2024. The counter tracks how many of the 32 you have.
The twelve founding members are the block worth learning first, and the twelve that joined between 1999 and 2009 are the block almost nobody can list. They are the same size, and one is far harder than the other.
Two answers surprise people every time: Canada and the United States are both founding members. NATO is not a European organisation.
When the clock runs out, or when you give up, every country you missed is revealed in its wave.
Questions people ask
- How many countries are in NATO?
- 32, after Finland joined in 2023 and Sweden in 2024. Twelve were founding members in 1949 and twenty have joined since. Ukraine, Georgia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are aspirant members rather than members.
- Can I change the timer?
- Yes. Pick 3, 5, 10 or 15 minutes before you start, or choose Count up — that mode has no limit and the clock stops the moment you get the last one, so it doubles as a speedrun timer. Your choice is remembered for next time.
- Do I have to press Enter?
- No. Every answer is taken the moment you finish spelling it and the box clears itself, so you can type straight through a run without touching Enter. Names that begin another name are handled too: type “niger” and Niger counts immediately, then carry on with “ia” — or just type “nigeria” in one go — and Nigeria counts as well.
- Does spelling have to be exact?
- Capitals, spaces, hyphens, punctuation and accents are all ignored, so “uk” matches the United Kingdom, “usa” matches the United States and “czech republic” matches Czechia. There is no Enter to press — an answer counts the instant you finish spelling it.
- Which countries joined NATO most recently?
- Finland in April 2023 and Sweden in March 2024, both after decades of formal non-alignment. Before them, North Macedonia joined in 2020 and Montenegro in 2017.
- Do I need an account?
- No. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to install, no ads in the way of the board. Your best score is kept in your own browser and never leaves your device.
